Urban Forests

Image
Construction of cities comes with many planning challenges such as clearing trees and failing to put up effective replanting strategies. ‘Urban forests’ are important and should be set out close to residentials and along major highways where high pollution has been documented. Currently, there is a lot of urban construction and road expansion going on in Kenya. These projects come with environmental degradation effects. For instance, the Nairobi Expressway construction led to a loss of trees - an undertaking that put the  Marabou storks at risk. Not only did the project impact lives such as the storks, but also biodiversity along the stretch of 27 km highway at large. Similar scenarios are expected in numerous road and town expansion projects across the country. Therefore, there is a need to adopt suitable and sustainable urban policies, and where they do exist, a better implementation plan is pivotal. One of the most reliable and sustainable approaches to controlling pollution a...

Planning for inclusive teaching and learning.

Image
As a language teacher, I have been open-minded and flexible in my teaching practice. I always adhere to the theories of teaching including planning, delivery, assessment and giving feedback. In my planning for instance I use both the initial and diagnostic assessment to assist learners to develop IPL. In lesson planning, I employ pedagogy and teaching style that take into account learners’ needs. Considering Vark's learning style theory (Neil Flemming in 1987), I carefully model my delivery style to ensure my students meet the objectives I set for the lesson.  Depending on the type of learners in my class (that is audio, visual or kinaesthetic), I chose the channel the ensure the content of the lesson is put across. For instance, I give out notes, and handouts; use textbooks, write notes on the board or project visual materials for visual learners to absorb what I teach. In case, I have Auditory learners in my class, I incorporate audio by either reading as they listen or they read...

Communication approaches can affect the learning of numeracy processes and skills.

Mathematical proficiency requires a student to be able to communicate in a way that meets the goals of mathematics instruction including solving mathematical problems, communicating and reasoning mathematically, making mathematical connections, and modelling and interpreting practical situations. However, this can be affected by approaches a teacher use in a Math class. Therefore, effective learning of numeracy skills should incorporate representation, listening, reading, discussion and writing. A teacher may employ group discussions, put mathematical questions in a context that learners are familiar with, encourage students to express their opinions, guide learners to understand instructional material and encourage them to write or work out mathematical activities to help students develop mathematical skills.

Ways to promote equality and value diversity as a teacher

Image
Equality and diversity is the idea of promoting and accepting the differences that exist between people. Equality is to ensure nobody is discriminated against in any way whatsoever on grounds of age, race, sex, gender, learning difficulties and disabilities, physical disability, religion, marital status, sexual orientation or financial status. Diversity, on the other hand, is enabling and valuing the differences within, between and among people. The aim of a teacher should thus is to create an environment where all learners thrive despite the differences that might exist between them. This will create multiculturalism and an all-inclusive atmosphere where uniqueness is appreciated and nurtured or attended to rather than discriminated against. As a teacher, I would foster equality and value diversity by: First, I will set clear rules on how learners should be treated in class in line with anti-discrimination legislation within my context. In addition, I will create awareness about treat...

Wind Energy

Image
Wind energy is one of the renewable energy sources. Unlike non-renewable sources, they cannot be depleted. Wind energy replenishes itself naturally. As the world’s energy demands grow, it is therefore ideal for Africa now to consider such non-renewable energy technologies as wind energy. This is not only because it cannot be depleted but also wind energy does not pose much threat to our environment. Thus, wind energy as one of the clean energy can be counted to replace fossil fuels.  Wind power is produced by a wind turbine. A turbine converts the kinetic energy, that is, the force of the wind acting on rotor blades into mechanical energy (torque). The rotational energy can be put into usage in a range of options including power generation, windmills, wind generators, and water pumps. Wind turbines can be located onshore or offshore (Asumadu-Sarkodie and Owusu, 2016). Wind energy technologies are already being manufactured and deployed on large scale across the world. ...

Impact of current/proposed/reduced US tariffs under Biden's Administration.

Biden Administration inherited tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump’s Administration which many economists and analysts see as harming U.S. consumers and companies. The tariffs initiated by Trump Administration that remain in place under Biden Administration include tariffs on imported steel and aluminium, solar panels, washing machines and a variety of Chinese imports. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) report issued on July 1, 2021, “ Concluding Statement of the 2021 Article IV Mission ,” took a swipe at the U.S. concerning these trade policies. The IMF advised the Biden Administration to remove these tariffs as they are a hindrance to free trade.  These tariffs have seen the U.S. carrying the burden of tariff hikes, that is, they have had a negative impact not only on American workers and wage-earners but also on consumers. The tariffs imposed on these imports implied that some companies had to close shops due to high importation costs due to the interruption to t...
