How self-discloser ruined a six-year-long relationship.

Last year's self-discloser led to an abrupt end of a close relationship between me and a close friend of mine of about six years. We met in high school and we grew to develop a strong bond – we would study together, visit each other and would at times go out together.   For much of 2020, the country was on a lockdown due to the pandemic, COVD-19; we would thus call each other for hours on phone, text just to keep the friendship alive. Indeed we were close and at times we called each other sisters. For sure, our friendship and closeness made us pass time in a quiet way when most people around us were so stressed and depressed. I can recall well how we would tell stories past midnight that even my siblings admired our friendship.   After being indoors for a couple of months, we planned to meet at a park, our usual spot before the pandemic struck. I was so elated to meet my best friend though we didn’t exchange hugs as before. Pretty sad. We sat for hours talking about our past l...

Prison Industrial Complex

In America, imprisonment is being used as a means of correcting societal problems under the pretext of “crime”. Davis (1998), argues that the use of prisons in such a manner to perform what she terms “magic” to social problems is not offering correction it ought to do but rather has been used by the system of capitalists, including government to rake huge profits. This conversation of the penal structure into a chain of the profit-making vulture to benefit business-government is referred to as the “Prison Industrial Complex”.  Prison industrial complex has expanded in the past decades to accommodate investments ranging from prison privatization to transportation of prisoners from state to state. This corporatization of punishment is defined as a prison industrial complex and it is growing so fast. Unfortunately, this corporatocracy is being advanced by the system bent on perpetuating racism amongst other discrimination against a sector of its population. Davis (1998), in her articl...

Why a teacher should record learners’ individual learning goals?

In planning to meet learners’ needs, it is very crucial to document the step you take as a teacher. Recording procedures and outcomes of negotiations between you and the learners is important as it would help in case you need a reference; also it would act as witness testimony of your work.  While encouraging learners to keep their learning logs, you should file copies of students’ Individual Learning Plans (ILP) and action plans. You should always ensure you abide by your institutions’ information management procedures and protocols for confidentiality and the safety of learners’ information.

Methods of initial and diagnostic assessment to negotiating and agreeing on individual learning goals with learners

My experience in the teaching and learning process when dealing with a group is that a classroom has learners with varied needs. Initial and diagnostic assessment usually reveals diverse learners’ requirements. The broad range of needs thus requires skilful and specific planning, design, delivery and assessment.    Having set targets with individual learners within my class, I plan my lesson with appropriate materials that meet the identified needs. My delivery methodology of the lessons from the introduction, development of the lesson, and conclusion aim to engage learners and allow them to participate intended to develop their skills, talents and knowledge. I provide feedback to learners in such a way that each of them grows towards their set targets, both long-term and short term, as planned after the initial assessment. I also provide the required help (support needs) as we progress with the students toward their set goals. In the case of referrals, I recommend appropriate...

The role and use of initial and diagnostic assessment in agreeing on individual learning goals.

The teaching and learning process requires the tutor and a learner to have a healthy relationship. Therefore, the teacher should know the learner(s) before introducing any new learning programmes. As a tutor, I will conduct an initial assessment aimed to diagnose and assess individual learners’ needs. This will give me a clear picture of the goals, achievements, skills and interests of each student. With the knowledge of their needs, including weaknesses and strengths. I will then sit down with each learner to map the way forward, that is, to correlate the outcome of the initial assessment and intended targets.    My analysis will involve the learner, that is, a negotiation. I will make the learners to be aware of their needs and also see how we reach the best strategies to meet those needs. My task will therefore guide the learners in setting their own learning goals – I will encourage them to develop their own Individual Learning Plans (ILP), setting targets and actions plan...

Gender and Race are a Social Construction

Gender and race are social construction in our society (Kenya) and beyond our borders. However, in objective reality, they do not exist. These divisions have been used over centuries not to view human beings as diverse but rather to decide the fate of populations, usually in a biased manner. In regards to gender, women have been oppressed as they have been defined by their sexuality as inferior to men. Similarly, the race was used as a tool to enslave those perceived to be of Negroid root (Lopez, 2017). In his argument of race as a social construct, Lopez, 2017 opines that race is an illusion and asserts that, “… few in this society seem prepared to relinquish fully their subscription to notions of biological race.” He builds his argument from the Wrights generation vs Hudgins case of Virginia, 1806, whose culmination saw Judge Tucker free three generations of women as Hannah's hair (the mother) was long and straight. The observation test proved they were of Indian descent and ...
