Ways to promote equality and value diversity as a teacher
Equality and diversity is the idea of promoting and accepting the differences that exist between people. Equality is to ensure nobody is discriminated against in any way whatsoever on grounds of age, race, sex, gender, learning difficulties and disabilities, physical disability, religion, marital status, sexual orientation or financial status. Diversity, on the other hand, is enabling and valuing the differences within, between and among people.
The aim of a teacher should thus is to create an environment where all learners thrive despite the differences that might exist between them. This will create multiculturalism and an all-inclusive atmosphere where uniqueness is appreciated and nurtured or attended to rather than discriminated against. As a teacher, I would foster equality and value diversity by:
First, I will set clear rules on how learners should be treated in class in line with anti-discrimination legislation within my context. In addition, I will create awareness about treating others fairly and equally.
Secondly, I will ensure I plan and prepare to teach and learn resources putting into consideration the diverse needs of learners in my class. I will create an effective learning environment for every learner. For example, using a large print format for those with sight problems or letting them sit close to the writing board.
Third, during the delivery of my lesson, I will ensure I use different teaching approaches that cater for diverse learners within my class. I will review my delivery methodology to make sure each pupil is motivated and thus getting engaging in-class activities.
Fourth, in assessing learners' work, I will employ different approaches. For instance, I would use a functional approach for learners with disabilities.
Finally, I will be observant to tackle any barrier that might hinder learning and assessment for individual learners or groups. I will offer support to learners, for example, help pupils manage emotional problems or any other difficulty that might arise.
All in all, these approaches will create a non-discriminatory environment where students have equal worth, thus eliminating stereotypes, discrimination, bias and misconceptions.
