The role and use of initial and diagnostic assessment in agreeing on individual learning goals.

The teaching and learning process requires the tutor and a learner to have a healthy relationship. Therefore, the teacher should know the learner(s) before introducing any new learning programmes. As a tutor, I will conduct an initial assessment aimed to diagnose and assess individual learners’ needs. This will give me a clear picture of the goals, achievements, skills and interests of each student. With the knowledge of their needs, including weaknesses and strengths. I will then sit down with each learner to map the way forward, that is, to correlate the outcome of the initial assessment and intended targets.

My analysis will involve the learner, that is, a negotiation. I will make the learners to be aware of their needs and also see how we reach the best strategies to meet those needs. My task will therefore guide the learners in setting their own learning goals – I will encourage them to develop their own Individual Learning Plans (ILP), setting targets and actions plans for the tasks. These strategies thus will inform the choice of teaching and learning techniques to meet the set targets (short and long-term) of the students for attaining the objectives of the programme.
